Important places: Bio Norden

Bio Norden is an old cinema of the type that was often built in the Swedish countryside during the first half of the 20th century.

The building was erected in 1935 by the then owner of the hotel Gästgiveriet, Axel Åkerlund. Mr. Åkerlund began organizing film screenings in Jokkmokk as early as 1915, and Bio Norden became a natural continuation of that business.

Bio Norden has a cultural building protection and was used as a movie theater until 2012, when the last film was shown here. However, Bio Norden is still an important building for Jokkmokk’s cultural life, not least during the market when many well-attended events are held here.

Important locations: Ájtte

Del av utställning på Ájtte, svenskt fjäll- och samemuseum.

During the Jokkmokk market, Ájtte, the Swedish Mountain and Sámi Museum, is something of a hub here in Jokkmokk. Many market visitors come here for the museum’s exhibitions and the solid market program with special exhibitions, lectures, film screenings and guided tours.

Outside in the museum park, you can usually drink coffee cooked over an open fire, and maybe even meet a reindeer or two. In short, there’s something happening here all the time throughout the market week.
